Section A

Surah An-Nisā’ (4:1–10) — Justice Begins at Home

Most people think Surah An-Nisā’ is primarily about women’s rights, inheritance, and family law.

But Allah begins somewhere much deeper.

Before speaking about laws, wealth, marriage, or inheritance, Allah addresses all of humanity:

“O mankind! Fear your Lord, who created you from a single soul…” (4:1)

This opening verse is the foundation of the entire surah.

It reminds us that every human being shares the same Creator and the same origin. No race, tribe, nationality, wealth, social status, or gender makes one person inherently superior to another.

The only true measure of honor is taqwa.

From this foundation, Allah teaches that justice does not begin in courts or governments.

It begins at home.

A society cannot claim to be civilized if it neglects those who are most vulnerable. That is why the first practical commands in this surah focus on protecting:

• Orphans and their wealth

• Women’s dignity and inheritance rights

• Family relationships and kinship

• Trust (amanah) and honest stewardship of property

The Qur’an transformed a society where the weak were often exploited into one where they became protected by Divine law.

More than 1,400 years later, the forms of injustice have changed, but the problems remain familiar:

• Child neglect

• Domestic violence

• Financial fraud

• Elder abuse

• Corruption and breach of trust

• Family breakdown

• Social inequality

The Qur’anic solution also remains unchanged:

Taqwa → Compassion → Justice → Trust → Strong Families → Strong Society

Every great civilization begins with strong institutions, but Islam teaches that the first institution is the family.

When parents fulfill their responsibilities, children are protected, women are honored, the weak are cared for, and trust is upheld, justice naturally spreads throughout society.

Surah An-Nisā’ reminds us that the strength of a nation is not measured only by its economy, military, or technology.

It is measured by how it treats those who cannot defend themselves.

Key Lessons from Section A (4:1–10):

Humanity is one family under one Creator.

Taqwa is the foundation of justice.

Protecting the vulnerable is a religious obligation.

Wealth is a trust, not a privilege.

Family is the first building block of civilization.

Justice begins inside the home before it reaches society.

Reflection

A just civilization is not built by laws alone. It begins when every family recognizes that every human being is a trust from Allah. When taqwa shapes the home, justice shapes the nation.

Al Nisā Sec B

Surah An-Nisā’ Section B teaches that wealth is a trust from Allah, justice begins with honoring the rights He has assigned, and true success is measured not by what we leave behind, but by how faithfully we fulfill our responsibilities before returning to Him.

Sec C 4:19-35

The essence of Surah An-Nisā’ Section C (Verses 19–35) is that marriage in Islam is established as a sacred covenant grounded in justice, mercy, mutual responsibility, and preserving the dignity of both spouses.

The passage functions as a single ethical unit that transformed archaic customs. It establishes kindness (ma'rūf) as the fundamental requirement for all interactions, even during difficult times. It strictly prohibits coercing or exploiting women—abolishing the pre-Islamic practice of inheriting widows like property and protects their right to consent and financial autonomy, including the dowry (mahr).

While often misunderstood, the discussion of family leadership (Qawwāmūn in 4:34) describes a caretaking responsibility linked to financial stewardship, rather than intrinsic human superiority. In severe marital discord, the Prophet’s own example of kindness serves as the definitive ethical model, overriding any interpretation that justifies abuse. Furthermore, the Qur’an mandates that mediation from both families must be attempted to seek reconciliation before separation, emphasizing that strong families are the bedrock of a stable society.
